New Restaurants
Little Chef hit the small screens last year, as Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal revamped our menu and the look of one of our restaurants as part of a Channel 4 documentary, ‘Big Chef takes on Little Chef’.
The new-style Little Chef was initially trialed at our Popham restaurant on the A303 near Basingstoke and the programme charted the journeys of both Heston and his vision for a 21st century Little Chef, and the employees involved.
With the opening of the new style Little Chef restaurants, we though you would like to hear from our people about their experiences.
The Menu
The focus of Heston's menu is really about quality, tradition, British-inspired good food, nostalgia and family fun. Quality food is key, as well as imagination and some great new and unexpected ingredients such as popping candy and the ‘smell of the chip shop’. View the menu.
The restaurant design
Ab Rogers, award-winning architect and designer created the concept for a bright, airy, clean and modern environment ideal for families, the casual coffee drinker and a comfortable meeting area. A variety of seating styles encourage a real sense of fun and play. Sounds of the kitchen and Spike Milligan poems are played in the toilets and the ambient lighting creates a chic and modern dining experience.
Since the Popham restaurant reopened to the public at the end of November 2008, the reaction to the menu and fresh new look has been overwhelming.
After months of speculation and following a full trial period at our Popham restaurant, we felt the time was right to enter the next stage of development and decided to re-launch two further restaurants in the same style as our Popham restaurant. Both York and Kettering West are now open, and feature the same menu that Heston produced at Popham.
The refurbishment of York & Kettering West created a minimum of 35 jobs locally and were filmed for a further episode; Did Heston Change Little Chef.
